Jacopo Annese, Ph.D

Director of The Brain Observatory at UC San Diego

Jacopo Annese, Ph.D. is the director of The Brain Observatory, at the University of California San Diego. Dr. Annese received Master's degrees in Biology and Zoology from the University of Rome, Italy, (La Sapienza) and a Master's degree in Neurological Science from the University College London. He received a Ph.D. from Dartmouth College in Cognitive Neuroscience.

The Brain Observatory is a member of the prestigious Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives, a nonprofit organization of more than 300 leading neuroscientists committed to increasing public awareness about the progress and promise of brain research and to disseminating information on the brain in an understandable and accessible fashion. The lab has over 3,200 followers on Facebook and received the 2011 ‘Labby’ Multimedia Award (The Scientist) for best website design.

Dr. Annese also leads the Digital Brain Library project, an ambitious effort to preserve a vast archive of human brains together with their medical and life history and the results of a variety of assessments including IQ, cognitive functioning, and personality tests. The Digital Brain Library was featured as one of the world’s most innovative brain bank by the Financial Times (December 2011). Included in the brain bank are renowned scientists, artists and important medical cases, such as the amnesic patient H.M. In the short term, the archive will answer crucial questions about the mechanisms of major neurological diseases like Parkinson and Alzheimer's. In the long term the library will match patients living with neurological disease to images and data that Annese and his team are collecting now. The project leverages a combination of digital and web technologies with citizen science to construct a financially sustainable archive that will become large enough to account for variability of the human brain and the expression of disease in individual patients.
