ABOUT THE SCRIPPS RESEARCH INSTITUTE

The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) is one of the world’s largest independent, nonprofit research organizations focusing on research in the biomedical sciences. TSRI’s philosophy emphasizes the creation of basic knowledge in the biosciences for its application in medicine, the pursuit of fundamental scientific advances through interdisciplinary programs, and collaborations.

An institution that evolved from the Scripps Metabolic Clinic, founded by philanthropist Ellen Browning Scripps in 1924, the institute now employs 3,000 people on its campuses in La Jolla, CA, and Jupiter, FL, where renowned scientists—including three Nobel laureates—work toward their next discoveries. The La Jolla campus provides more than 1 million square feet of space on 35 acres in close proximity to the University of California, San Diego, and San Diego’s vibrant scientific community. The Jupiter campus, which officially opened in 2009, provides more than 300,000 square feet of space on 30 acres adjacent to Florida Atlantic University and the Max Planck Florida Institute.

In addition to training hundreds of postdoctoral fellows, preparing them to meet the scientific challenges of the future, TSRI offers a distinguished graduate program in the biological and chemical sciences that is consistently ranked among the top 10 in the nation. Furthermore, The Scripps Research Institute provides opportunities for middle school, high school, and undergraduate students to learn more about science and scientific careers, as well as programs for high school and middle school teachers to enrich their knowledge and curriculum. LAB EXPERIENCE INCLUDES

Genomics, Cardiology & Wireless Health with Dr. Eric Topol
Dr. Eric Topol, Director of The Scripps Translational Science Institute, is a practicing cardiologist and pioneer in the field of cardiovascular medicine. Dr. Topol has focused his research in the areas of genomics, wireless sensors, preventative cardiology, coronary artery disease, and preventative medicine. Through his research, Dr. Topol spearheaded the discovery of multiple genes that increase susceptibility for heart attack. Dr. Topol has worked to create genomic and wireless digital technologies that are reshaping the future of medicine. In a 2012 poll conducted by Modern Healthcare, Dr. Topol was voted as the number one most influential physician executive in the United States.

In his most recent book, The Creative Destruction of Medicine: How the Digital Revolution Will Create Better Health Care, Dr. Topol address how social networking and technology – especially smart phones – will better connect the individual to the medical field. Through his labs at The Scripps Research Institute, Dr. Topol has been able to focus on more personalized medicine that will be more effective in not only treating a patient, but also bringing down the costs of health care. Using the genome and digital technologies, Dr. Topol’s research works to understand each person at the biologic, physiologic granular level to determine appropriate therapies and prevention. An example of this personalized medical research is the use of pharmacogenomics on clopidogrel (Plavix).
